Proposition 65 Warning &Consumer Notice
WARNING: Consuming this product can expose you to chemicals including lead, which is known to the State of California to cause cancer and birth defects or other reproductive harm. For more information, visit www.P65Warnings.ca.gov/food.
What Is Proposition 65?
Proposition 65, officially known as the Safe Drinking Water and Toxic Enforcement Act of 1986, is a California law that requires businesses to provide warnings if their products may expose consumers to chemicals linked to cancer, birth defects, or other reproductive harm, as identified by the state.
Why Am I Seeing This Warning?
Our matcha is tested for safety and quality, and it meets or exceeds all relevant FDA and USDA standards for adult consumption. However, California’s Prop 65 has stricter and unique warning requirements, which apply even when products contain naturally occurring trace levels of certain elements, such as lead, that are far below federal safety limits. Lead is a naturally occurring mineral found in soil and water, and can be absorbed by tea plants from the environment. It may also be introduced through environmental factors beyond agricultural control. Rather than test each product for all 1,000+ substances on the Prop 65 list or prove exemptions on a batch-by-batch basis, we provide this warning out of an abundance of caution to comply with California law.
What Does the Warning Mean for You?
A Proposition 65 warning does not mean that our product is unsafe. It means we are being transparent and complying with California’s labeling laws by informing you of the potential for trace exposure to listed substances—even when those levels fall within federally recognized safety margins.
Important Note: We do not add any heavy metals, lead, or harmful substances to our products. Our teas are grown and processed to meet rigorous international safety standards.
